Two lions from Akagera National Park have died

Akagera National Park has announced the death of two lions that were part of the seven lions brought to Rwanda in 2015 as part of efforts to reintroduce the mammals to the country.

The lions, named Ntwali (aged 13) and Ngagari (aged 12), both passed away due to old age, with the park reporting their deaths at the end of December 2023.

These two lions were originally introduced to Rwanda from Etosha National Park in Namibia and were relocated to the northeast part of Akagera National Park to spend their remaining years.

Akagera National Park now houses a total of 60 lions, along with various other species of animals.
